Myopia Management

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is the most common reason for blurry vision in patients under 40. It is caused by eyes that grow too long and/or bend light too quickly. Once a child becomes myopic, the blurred long-distance vision tends to get worse and worse over time. However, there are ways to slow down this worsening. This is accomplished through myopia management also referred to as myopia control. Myopia Management is a proven method that has been shown to effectively slow down the progression of myopia. Slowing down the progression of myopia serves multiple purposes including;

1) The patient will have more functional natural vision throughout their life

2) The glasses will be less thick

3) The eyes will have less risk for harmful eye problems in the future such as a retina detachment.

4) The patient will be more likely to qualify for elective refractive surgery (i.e. Lasik) in the future (since less correction will be needed).

We are here to help our patients ages 6 to 18 manage their myopia. Low doses of atropine have been shown to effectively (and safely) slow down the progression of myopia by ~ 50% (while using the eye drop).

Schedule an eye appointment with our optometrists to determine if Myopia Management is the right choice for your child. If a decision is made between you and the doctor to pursue Myopia Management, a $350 service fee will cover two follow up visits during the year and the time the doctor spends working with the compounding pharmacy for you to purchase these eye drops.
